IDEAS

Inflammation

The consumption of Sugar and Polyunsaturated Seed Oils combine in our diet to create inflammation in every blood vessel wall and in every tissue in every organ of the body. The inflammatory process makes everything susceptible to damage and disease.

There is nothing to lose from reducing the sugar and processed food intake in the diet for a few months and seeing what happens.

‘Epidemic’ of Osteoarthritis of the Knee Blog

Facebook blog Feb 25 2013

Osteoarthritis of the knee is increasing dramatically in society and this is in direct relationship to our obesity epidemic.

Our joints are wearing out under excess load and the knee seems to be one of the first to go.  The number of total knee replacements being performed has increased 4 fold over the last 17 years with over 20000 knee replacements being performed on an annual basis in Australia alone. This is up from just over 5000 procedures in 1994. The knee joint is failing quicker than the hip joint. This is part of the massive economic cost associated with obesity.

Up to 8 times your body weight goes through the patellofemoral joint (kneecap area of the knee) when you get in and out of a chair or up and down stairs.  A 10 kilogram weight loss takes 80 kilograms of pressure off the knee joint and those patients that start getting on board the concept of losing weight clearly show benefits.

There was a recent paper which suggested a 5 kilogram weight loss can be associated with up to as much as a 30% decrease in knee symptoms.

If you want to lose weight then cut out the sugar and then you will lose the hunger. It’s then much easier to cut down the portion size and caloric load – the weight will come off.
